You’ve read our timely Big Christmas List of 10 Things To Do In Singapore. It’s only natural therefore that Team Expat follows that one up with one of the most highly anticipated events of the year: the Marina Bay Singapore Countdown 2016.
This year, the Marina Bay Singapore Countdown 2016 also marks Singapore’s first post SGD50 event, so you know the turnout’s going to be magnificent. If you’re an expat who has just relocated to Singapore, or one who hasn’t experienced the highly rated annual celebration yet in all your years of settling on the little red dot, then this is a not-to-be-missed event, especially if you’re looking to start 2016 with a bang.
We’ve compiled a list of activities that you can look forward to at the largest Countdown event in the island city-state, in the order they take place!
1. Share in the Festive Cheer at Esplanade Presents: Celebrate December
18 – 31 Dec 2015, various timings
December is the season for celebrations, and Esplanade Mall knows it. Exciting activities suitable for both adults and kids have been planned for the two weeks leading up to the New Year, such as free music performances, craft workshops, and interactive storytelling sessions! Need a special boost for the New Year? Join the hundreds of people who have penned their wishes on the bell charms decorating the walkways of the Waterfront.
However, if public activities are not your cup of tea, you can opt to do some last-minute holiday shopping or better still, some Chinese New Year shopping—there are attractive promotions mall-wide, and with every SGD 50 spent, you get to pick a mystery gift, while stocks last! Check out the full list of promotions here.
2. Check Out the Wishing Spheres Installation
26 -31 December
By now it’s too late to write your wish on one of the 20,000 wishing spheres, but you can still write your wishes virtually at www.marinabaycountdown.sg. Then head down to Marina Bay to witness the grand culmination of the ‘Wish Upon A Sphere’ event—all the wishing spheres will be set afloat to create one of the most stunning large-scale displays! You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more beautiful sight than 20,000 hopes and wishes for 2016 from people of all walks of life, reminding us that despite our physical differences, we share the same wish for a better future.
3. Experience An Explosion of Colour
Fullerton Hotel Singapore
26 – 30 Dec 2015, 8.15pm, 9.15pm, 10.15pm and 11.15pm nightly; 31 Dec 2015, 8pm, 9pm, 10pm, 11pm, 11.55pm
Inject some artistic flair into your New Year celebrations with a digital art showcase at The Fullerton Hotel Singapore. Aptly named ‘An Explosion of Colour’, the light show combines vibrant imagery and intricate textures to bring the architectural designs of this national landmark to life. The display will culminate in a spectacular countdown sequence on New Year’s Eve. Hint: There are fireworks involved.
4. Check out the Wares at Marina Waterfront Bazaar
Marina Bay Waterfront Promenade
31 Dec 2015, 3pm – 3am
Looking for a more unique shopping experience aside from the Esplanade Mall? You’ll find just the thing at the Marina Waterfront Bazaar, which promises an exceptional and fulfilling shopping experience for everyone. The goods on display include artisan handicrafts, collectibles, fashion apparel and accessories, party novelties and lighted gadgets. If you’re tired after your productive shopping trip, light refreshments are also available at affordable prices.
5. Join the Party at MediaCorp Presents: Celebrate 2016
The Float@Marina Bay
31 Dec 2015, 8.00pm – 12.15am (Ticketed)
If you’re one for parties, then this will be one of the biggest one you’ll join this year! Dance the night away, or more accurately, for 7 hours non-stop with a star-studded ensemble of local and international artistes such as Shane Pow (“It Takes Two”), Desmond Ng (“GeTai Challenge – The Ultimate Battle’”), Jeffrey Xu (“The Day It Rained On Our Parade”), and Alfred Sim (“Project SuperStar”), to performances by Adam Lambert (“American Idol Season 8”), Taufik Batisah (“Singapore Idol”), Inch Chua, Gareth Fernandez & The Momma Shop, THELIONCITYBOY and finalists from The Dance Floor.
You can purchase your tickets from Sistic here.
6. Witness the Specular Fireworks Show
It goes without saying that the highlight of the Marina Bay Singapore Countdown 2016 is the much-lauded fireworks show prior to the countdown ceremony. According to The Strait Times, the pyrotechnics display will last eight minutes, set to an original score composed by Julian Wong, and accompanied by festive lighting and a special light projection exhibit on the façade of The Fullerton Hotel Singapore. Basically, it’s a VERY BIG DEAL, and luckily, with the opening of the new Jubilee Bridge this year, you’ll have more spots to view the visual spectacle from.
7. Commemorate your New Year through Snap & Win
Submission Deadline: 15 January 2016
In conjunction with the Marina Bay Singapore Countdown, the Marina Bay Singapore Countdown Photo Competition is held to showcase the countdown celebration as seen from the eyes of the public for those who were not able to witness it first-hand, as well as show an appreciation for budding and professional photographers alike. This year, the theme is “A Brighter Future”, and participants are to submit photos of the various festivities of the event that reflect this theme in order to stand a chance to win attractive prizes sponsored by Tigerair! That’s not all: Winning entries will be showcased in a digital exhibition on Suntec Singapore’s The Big Picture and The Nicoll Corner Screen in 2016, which gives you exclusive bragging rights!
If you’re set on visiting Marina Bay after reading this, Team Expat’s got a great staycation deal at Studio M Hotel which is located only minutes away, so you can countdown to the new year in lofty fashion! Check it out in the link given.
