Post-Olympics season promises more shocks and surprises

The 2016 HSBC Singapore Rugby 7s will be fondly remembered as the year when the reigning World Series champions Fiji were humbled by the Kenya 7s Shujaa in the final, as Singapore hosted a spectacularly successful World Rugby Sevens Series event after a gap of 10 years.

While Fiji remain firm favourites for this season, after striking gold at the 2016 Olympics, fans in Asia will be rooting for Japan, who defeated New Zealand for the very first time en route to an impressive fourth-place finish in Rio.

Last year’s HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series featured six different winners, and this season could be even more unpredictable. Several sides, like New Zealand and Samoa, have had changes in their management and are aiming to rise to the top of the rankings once more. The 12-time Series champions New Zealand will hope to halt Fiji’s run towards a hat-trick of Series wins, while Olympic silver medallists England, and the likes of South Africa, Samoa, Argentina and Wales are also contenders.

A state-of-the-art stadium that allows fans to interact without missing any action

The National Stadium, with air-cooled seats and the world’s largest free-spanning dome, was a huge hit with fans who loved the family-friendly concourse area. Here, spectators can interact with fellow fans, quench their thirst, sample the food and little ones can stretch their legs – without missing any of the on-field action.

“The 2016 HSBC Singapore 7s was a resounding success and Singapore has really positioned itself as an alternative to the Hong Kong 7s in Asia,” said World Rugby Chief Executive, Brett Gosper. “The Stadium is probably the best arena on offer among our 10 global destinations for the Series. It’s an amazing venue where people can walk around the circumference of the stadium yet remain connected with the matches going on. This is unlike other stadia, where fans lose contact with the action as soon as they leave their seats.”

The 2017 HSBC Singapore 7s has the theme ‘Show Your Colours’, and fans should seriously start planning their colourful costumes for this rugby celebration.

More ticketing and hospitality options available for Singapore’s annual rugby carnival

To improve the overall fan experience in 2017, spectators with the Category 1 ticketholders will have access to the entire concourse at Level 3. Category 1 two-day passes are available for SGD 120, while Category 2 (Level 4) tickets are priced at SGD 40 for adults, SGD 20 for youths (12 to 18 years) and just SGD 2 for children under 12. To enable more parents to attend with their kids, a family package (two adults and two children) is priced at SGD 260. These 20% discounted tickets are only available till 31 December 2016, with further discounts applicable for bulk-purchased tickets.

For fans seeking reserved, ring-side seats, Rugby Singapore have introduced Platinum (SGD 300) and Premium (SGD 200) passes. Besides their own designated seat, platinum pass holders can enjoy food, beverage and access to the Exclusive Platinum Seating Bar nearby. Already, more than half of the allocation of 1,001 Platinum and Premium passes have been taken up by members of the Friends of Singapore Rugby supporters’ group.

Exclusive hospitality packages, priced at SGD 1,440 per person, are also available till 31 December 2016. These buy you entry for both days, a back-of-house tour, a chance to meet Sevens legends, a VIP premium padded seat, concierge services, access to a private hospitality lounge with a delectable buffet three times a day, free-flow beverages and other exclusive benefits. Organisations looking to entertain clients or reward high-performing employees can acquire 10 or more of these packages at just SGD 1,360 each.

“Sevens Rugby is one of the most diverse and colourful sporting spectacles you can imagine, where 16 top teams from all five continents perform for fans from many different countries,” explained Low Teo Ping, Chairman, Rugby Singapore. “Besides dramatic games, tight finishes and spectacular celebrations, there are fans in fancy-dress, singing and chanting their teams to victory – all of which adds tremendous colour and spectacle to the on-field action. Given the success of the 2016 tournament, I would strongly urge fans to book their tickets early and avoid disappointment.”

‘Rock Ruck and Rumble’ across Singapore during HSBC Singapore 7s Week

Besides rocking and singing along to great music and interactive games with the in-stadium DJ, fans attending the 2017 event can expect ‘live’ musical acts both inside and outside the arena.

The traditional Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield formats will be replaced by the new Cup and Challenge Trophy competitions used in the Olympics. Expect bone-crushing rucks and sensational tries as the world’s top 16 teams battle for gold, silver and bronze medals over 45 games in this new and exciting tournament format. On April 14 & 15 2017, regional rugby fans can also enjoy the South East Asian Sevens held at Yio Chu Kang Stadium and the National Stadium respectively

Rugby aside, fans can expect to ‘rumble’ at activity zones offering interactive games around the Stadium and in 2017, the family-friendly Fun Zone will be moved to the Promenade area to minimise walking-distance and maximise play-time!

The Kids Drop Off zone, a massive draw last year for parents with young children, will be back to allow parents to leave their kids with professional minders, in a secure and child-friendly environment where they can be engaged and entertained with games and activities.

The offer of an ‘integrated experience’ extends beyond the Singapore Sports Hub to other precincts and outlets across the island, where overseas visitors and local fans can expect discounts and privileges with their HSBC Singapore 7s passes. Free transport will also be laid on for fans on matchdays to join in the revelry at designated After Party venues.

To buy tickets at the best prices possible, please visit www.singapore7s.sg right away. The first 5,000 buyers of Category 1 tickets can also claim a free event t-shirt while stocks last.
